Medicine Bottle Drawings

I've been bottling small creature drawings for a while now. These little specimens will be available at the Barbican Art Market, from 2.30-9.30pm today, along with a selection of prints and some special screen-printed Christmas cards (inspired mostly by Frozen Planet.) Pop along and check out the Curio stall, you'll recognize it by the huge deer skin rug!

'Specimen' at the Dead Dolls Club

'Specimen' went down a storm - thanks to everyone that came to see the show and is still planning on doing so! Had a lot of good reactions to the work and the space it was in. Many thanks to Adam and Daryl of The Dead Doll's Club and you can follow their many adventures in interiors and forays in food here. I will be doing some more wall drawings for some of their interesting pop-up restaurants in the coming months. Nice little reviews from Creative Review and Amelia's Magazine, plus mentions on the VNA and the Inkygoodness blogs.

For the two pieces above ('Bouquet') and below ('Cyclopic') I concentrated my efforts on original drawing. This was a little strange for me as I work predominantly in print. Nevertheless, they completely absorbed me for a few weeks, though in reality I'm not sure that they worked within the context of the space. But, you win some - you lose some. And I'm pretty sure I honed my drawing skills, so all was not lost. I'll be doing some print work in the next few weeks using these drawings so keep one eye out.

I also did something I have been thinking about for a while, little drawings in old glass medicine bottles. These were really fun to do and really effective. This photograph doesn't really do them justice. They'll be up on the Dead Doll's Club shop when the exhibition comes down at the end of this month.

Polly Alizarin Harvey absolutely smashed it, with two blinding bits of large scale collage, plus two smaller pieces. She also created a piece especially for the glass coffee table in the room.

Rebecca Hiscocks screen printed an entire wall of wallpaper, with her hand drawn cartouches, plus exhibiting two hand-made (well, dad-made) lightboxes illuminating screen prints onto X-rays (that show her friend's gall stones). She also exhibited 'St Barts', the super screen-print onto plywood that was part of her Camberwell MA degree show. Lovely skeletal stuff.

'Specimen' is on at The Dead Doll's Club, Hackney until Sunday 27th November. Open Thursday - Saturdays and serving delicious stew and a variety of teas. Any other time - by appointment. Just swing me an email.

The third of November sees the opening of 'Specimen' at the Dead Dolls Club. The second exhibition we've done under the Curio name. The absence of a 'white cube' space has meant a whole heap of freedom, I'll be doing wall drawings and strange little sculptures plus original drawings and getting back in touch with my old friend, screen-print. I'm at the point at the moment where everything and nothing is finished, so my eye is doing a little twitch now and then. BUT I'm really excited about this show, the Dead Doll's Club is a great space and Adam and Daryl (the managers) are a talented two and bags of fun. So please, come see the opening next Thursday 3rd of November. It's only a stone throw away from Vyner Street in Hackney, so you'll be getting your First Thursday Fix, plus we're offering delectable canapes...

The Craft Off

Totem Totem Totem

Just a week to go now before the totems are released into the Zellig Gallery, Birmingham along with a menagerie of new work from international artists and illustrators (myself included). There are some great names involved, especially BILLY and Ian Watson. I wish I could attend the Private View as it looks like it's going to be pretty colourful and jam-packed with visual splendour. Best of luck to everyone involved, have a drink on my behalf and massive thanks to the splendid folk at Inky Goodness.

Here are a few sneak previews of my totem piece, exploring bizarre biology and the cell development that forms characters from mere microscopic strands of DNA. Hugely enjoyable and verging on obsessive, these line drawings are the way my work seems to be going at the moment. Go and see them in the flesh! Totem Homecoming Show opens Thursday 21st July at the Zellig Gallery, Custard Factory, Birmingham. Runs until July 30th. Don't miss it!

Tea Party

A recent private commission; a twisted rock legend version of the Mad Hatter's Tea Party. Quite a big job, this piece is about 120 x 200 cm. Took over my living room with it, spilled ink everywhere, listened to the Adam & Joe podcasts on 6 music. I hope there isn't too many flecks of spit from when I've burst out laughing. Loads of good fun, this one.

Urban Outfitters: Exhibition

In a stroke of luck, a friend put in a good word and my work is now on display at the Kensington branch of Urban Outfitters! Magic! Unframed versions of all the prints will be available to buy in store for the sum of £40. It's a great store, brimming with treats. AND it introduced me to the wonderful world of WHOLEFOODS. Their Kalamata Olive Bread has changed my life.

'Curio' Private View

Thursday saw the opening of 'Curio' at the East Gallery, Brick Lane. After much discussion, many bagels and lessons in drilling, our exhibition turned out to be a great success. Thanks to everyone that came down for the Private View and drank us out of house & home! Special thanks to James, for his help on the bar and to Mike for papping the event. Minnie Ha-ha

SO SO much going on at the moment that I feel a bit like my brain is made of feathers. A bit like the lady above. Her stage name was Minnie Ha-Ha or Koo Koo - The Bird Girl. A strange skeletal disorder meant she had only a tiny head, a beaked nose, barely any eyesight and hardly any hair. She starred in the feast scene of Tod Browning's 'Freaks' and by all accounts seemed to lead quite a happy, albeit a simple life. In other news, 'Curio' opens at the East Gallery on Thursday. Work is returning from the framers, prints are signed and editioned, invites are sent and bottles of wine are being begged, borrowed AND stolen. I have made a fair amount of new work for the show, hence why the blog and website have been a bit on the quiet side of late. Be great if you could make it down if you were in the area. Private view is 6-9pm Thursday 5th, with the exhibition continuing through the weekend until Monday. See you there.

Maria Vladimirova portrays the world, as if it was seen for the first time. This pioneering view on the world suggests that anything can be beautiful if you look closer. Beauty is a dynamic experience that can be coaxed out of the ugly and obscure.

I'm still playing around with imagery and characters from the Coney Island Freak Shows and the 'Barnum and Bailey' travelling circuses. But I've started to delve deeper into medical mutation and stomach turning compositions, inspired by trips to the Hunterian Museum and The Last Tuesday Society. Put Me Down

Here's my Mutants Print on show at Pick Me Up, in excellent company. Had a great time at Somerset House, met a bunch of really talented people; Daniel Frost, Otecki and the lovely chaps from Nous Vous amongst many others. Had some great conversations, mostly about Wonders of the Universe and barber mice.

Bought an incredible book from Ditto Press. Their books of art are works of art themselves.
The book is a forthcoming release of the work of Roisin Dunne and is the best thing I've bought this year.

And above is the Hermit Editions Print Box, featuring some delicious work by some hugely talented recent graduates. They were all a pleasure to work with.

PICK ME UP

Tomorrow sees the opening of the second Pick Me Up at Somerset House. Been grafting hard all week with the rest of the Concrete Hermit lot to put together a ruddy good show. Have a peek at the new & improved websites for all the different things Concrete Hermit has to offer; Nibwax for art books and small press zines, Hermit Editions for prints and The Hermit Store for clothing (see the new T-shirt range I helped design!) and artist designed products. I also have print up on display (see above) A four colour silk-screen print, edition of 50, available exclusively at Pick Me Up. Lionel 'The Lion Faced Man' was the relatively unimaginative title given to Stefan Bibrowski. His appearance, it was claimed, resulted from his pregnant mother's having watched his father being torn to shreds by a lion. A case of 'maternal impression'. Bibrowski suffered from an acute case of hypertrichosis, six inch locks covered his entire body, apart from his palms and the soles of his feet. He was an intelligent chap, picking up and speaking fluently in five languages whilst touring with the Barnum and Bailey Circus. His excess hair was truly his livelihood and he knew it. Once when he was staying at a hotel in New York, a fire broke out and Lionel was apparently the first out of the building claiming he "couldn't afford to have his face singed."

This 5-colour screen print, an edition of 20, will soon be available to purchase on my new Big Cartel shop (soon to be attached to the website).

Johnny Eck

Oh this man was wonderful. His name is Johnny Eck and he was a performer in P.T Barnum's sideshows and circus acts in the USA. Born as a twin, but missing all his body below the torso ('Broken Doll!' a midwife exclaimed at his birth) he lived to the age of eighty-six. In his life he accomplished more than most; a pianist, composer, painter, train conductor, racing car driver and photographer amongst many others. He made his own clothes to fit him perfectly, carved puppets to use in his shows, painted his own signs and lettering and when asked if he wished to have legs, he replied "Why would I want those? Then I'd have pants to press!"

What a chap. If anyone is in need of a healthy dose of perspective I suggest they do a little research on this incredible man.

During the month of December I invited my splendid and talented pal Simon Cook to exhibit at Concrete Hermit's Kingly Court shop space. He happily obliged and it was a grand success. Working under the alias Stone and Spear, he creates colourful collage pieces, mixing old photographs and considered graphics with a sense of humour and wit. Read about it on the Creative Review Blog and read more about him in this months issue of Elephant. Pictured above is a hand-cut paper wall collage, below are the prints (available through his website + online shop) and at the bottom a nice lovely picture of us both. Aaah.

Blimey. I don't know why I limited my drawing to animals for so long!? Faces are so satisfying to draw. Cheekbones, eyebags, wrinkles, loads to get your pen stuck into. This was part of an exhibition/working project at Camberwell. My face collection was made up of my research into 'Unusual People', strange dolls from the Museum of Childhood and Red Indians. Though one face distinctly reminds me of a friends ex-boyfriend, mildly inappropriate.

These Bearded Ladies aren't finished, they need some organising but I got so involved in the background stories behind these hairy dames that I needed to share them! The top dame is a lady called Madame Delait, a Parisian lady who was an avid member of the French Bicycle Club 'Cycle Thaonnais'. She apparently let her beard grown for a bet and became a national celebrity!

I haven't yet posted any of my work from Camberwell so far. I think because I have been busy in the library and print room formulating projects and feverishly drawing, I have been waiting for a point when I am content and happy with the way my work is going. So that's about now. I've been screen printing this Chief in two different 3-way colour compositions and fallen head over heels back in love with silkscreen.

Bookcase Discovery

Oh what a find.

I think it was this very book that made me start drawing in the first place. It's pages are browning and the stitching is loose and it smells incredible, that lovely historical smell. Notice how I've named all the animals, well, most. At seven I apparently didn't think that the pigs and sheep were worthy of personal names. I distinctly remember copying some of these pictures and I remember particularly enjoying drawing the hair-fringe covering the shire horses hooves. It has tea cup ghost stains on the front cover and my grandma's old address inside. I read a book years ago about a girl whose dad was a novelist and he kept his manuscripts in the salad drawer of his fridge in case of a fire. I'd definitely keep this book in my fridge.

Right then. A tremendous amount has happened since my last post. I moved to London, found a job, started a Masters, found a new running route around Victoria Park and finished the George Lucas biography that has been sitting on my bedside table and glaring at me for a year and a half. I have made a promise to myself to never neglect this blog again. It may also serve as my diary and thought-cupboard for these coming years.

At present I am in between houses and jobs. Having tied up all loose ends from all commissions based in Nottingham, and waiting to move in my new pile of bricks in East London (next wednesday!) I seem to have a lot of time on my hands. So I've been busying myself in the kitchen and in the nearby vegetable patch. I am a little closer to one of my Life Long Ambitions; to know each and every herb and spice and know exactly what dish it compliments. Here are some of my creations. Tonight: mackerel with chilli and lime. Tomorrow: Vegetable Calzone!

From top to bottom: fresh raspberries from the garden, roasted red peppers stuffed with spicy cous-cous and goats cheese for the Bank Holiday BBQ, garlic-roasted vegetables all from the garden then plum bake with a cheesecake swirl.

The Last Taxidermy

Here is the latest reason for my ink-stained fingers. A private commission in a swish pad in The Park, Nottingham. A very enjoyable project, the beautiful view from the balcony helped a little too. I do have to say that this might be my last bit of Taxidermy drawing for a little while. It's time to tackle the unknown. Starting with moving house to East London in less than a week. I'm truly excited and almost fully prepared for a diet consisting mostly of dry weetabix.

Barbershop Mutant

I have spent most of June and some of July working at a welcome leisurely pace on this complex beast of an ink drawing. It is applied to the walls of 28 Girls and Boy Barbers in Hockley, Nottingham (who, may I add, are expert fringe trimmers) and it stretches 10 feet up, covering the entire wall of old German maps. This was a really fun project, though installation could only take place when the shop was shut which meant my dinnertimes usually consisted of a bowl of muesli in a hairdressing chair. It was well worth it though.

I have spent most of the month of June flitting about and not doing too much of any one thing. Apart from getting anxious about my fast approaching move to London but then realising that nothing can be done at present. All this sunshine has meant that my productivity levels are at an all time low. Chilled watermelon and cloudless skies are just too hard to resist. You can see the result of my Studio Hermit Days up in The Bodega on Pelham Street now. I felt a little over-exposed all weekend, with a slightly nervous tummy every time I walked past but kind and lovely comments and emails have been pouring in so now I feel a lot better. If you happen to be in the area at a loose end, order a pint and see if you can locate the 14 animal species (2 doubles) 3 vegetables, 2 insects, 1 skeleton and 2 mutants. Good fun :)

Above is just one of the projects that has turned me into a Studio Hermit for most of the Spring/Summer transition period. Luckily, this week will mark the end of planning my days hour by hour and waking up thinking about frame sizes; just in time for me to increase my freckle count. And get back to pondering over my favourite Mini Milk flavour. It's between Strawberry and Vanilla at present, with Vanilla just getting the edge. Chocolate flavour doesn't get a look in. But back to business....

Above is the final plan for the wall installation at 28 Girls & Boys Barbers, found on Goosegate, Nottingham (well worth popping in for a trim). To be done with brush and ink on a wallpaper of vintage maps. I'm very much looking forward to getting started.

The project that has been the largest contributing factor to my Hermit Status is the selection of framed drawings for the Bodega. I posted some tidbits below. The work will be going up in full by this Friday 28th May. Do pop along if you're about for Dot to Dot festival. Do try to avoid me though, I will almost certainly be drunk and probably try to cover you in glitter.

Here are some sneaky snippets from a forthcoming project with the Bodega Social Club, Nottingham. I will be decorating the downstairs bar with my drawings of dalmatians, deer, deadly mushrooms and dilapidated treehouses, as well as a great many things that don't begin with 'D'. The work should be going up around the 24th May, just in time for Dot to Dot festival.

Camberwell Calling

Well.
I am feeling rather pleased. I have spent most of my 2010 working furiously on my application to study MA Illustration at Camberwell College, London and on Wednesday I travelled down to the Big Smoke. Extremely nervous, ludicrously overprepared. I was offered a place on the spot!
I have been smiling ever since. Add to that the arrival of Spring (it must be official now as I swapped my usual bowl of porridge for muesli and chopped braeburn this morning) and there is only joy! Expect drawings full of Hallelujah's.

COW MANCHESTER

I was commissioned by the vintage clothing soon-to-be household name company COW to design and illustrate a wall installation in the fitting rooms of their Manchester store, in Picadilly Gardens. Staying there for a week, I projected and planned out my drawings to be part of a interior room design complete with old boots, taxidermy key rack, fish bowl, ornate clock and a view of allotments. Technical failure on the final day meant that the wallpaper was left unfinished, plus a few small details though soon to be rectified - WATCH THIS (WEB) SPACE. I was illustrating live at the COW Student Lock In...great fun, made some pals, drank free beer (see photos of the event and find out more about COW at http://www.wearecow.blogspot.com/) Had a smashing time. See below for a variety of photos and details, but do check back to see the full finished article. And I'll have drawn some birds too. I love birds.

Trophy Heads at Lee Rosy's Tea Shop

After travelling Europe for part of the summer, my 'Back To School' Project for September was a Hand-Drawn wall installation at Lee Rosy's Tea on Broad Street, Nottingham. The collection of Trophy Heads and Taxidermy was hand-drawn with ink and brush and my framed works on paper decorate the rest of the tea shop.
It took quite a while but the splendid staff plied me with free tea so I left with no complaints, if a little over-caffeinated. I recommend the Rooibos Flower Dance and the Apple Cake. Ths exhibition is still up now so if you're in the Hockley Area of Nottingham do drop in for a look and a Hot Bev.

'Not on White Paper' was an unconventional drawing show, shown from the 3rd til the 14th December 2008 at the Malt Cross Gallery, St. James' Street, Nottingham.

This exhibition was a joint curatorial project by Jennifer Webber (myself) and Naomi Terry.

Curatorial Statement.

'Not on White Paper' is a collection of line based work, of any medium or material, that side steps the conventional format of drawing. By taking away the limitations of white paper that are ordinarily applied to this medium, the exhibition aims to broaden the expected perceptions of drawing and elevate its status.Whether it be of simple or complex construction, the intent of the exhibition is to exemplify the fundamental elements of drawing. The work shown retains the honest qualities of line, in which the process of expression is evident in the marks made.

This is what I had to say about the work last year.

My interest lies in a specific aspect of the everyday. It is the remaining evidence, the tangible traces of the previous that often go unnoticed in amongst the bustling present. My practice is centered around an ongoing search for these easily missed yet ever lingering clues. I want to draw out the aspects of the everyday that, on closer inspection, construct a tangible imagery of a fraction of a past belonging to another, set within another time. It is the fragments of evident humanity that capture my imagination. I have long been seeking a term that better defines the essence of what it is I seek. I have needed to articulate the very core of my findings that are particularly reminiscent of human intervention. It is evidence of the little noticed conscious thoughts and actions that work as clues to build up a narrative somewhere in between fact and fiction. I am searching within the everyday, uncovering the fleeting moments of notable triviality from beneath the blanket of routine and the mundane.

From this ongoing search I document the fleeting moments with sketches and photographs. From these records I produce hand drawn stop frame animated films commemorating the trivialities I have witnessed. The films are presented as subtle, small scale rear projections. Not a great deal happens in each film yet there is clear evidence of the investment of time and the labour intensive process which in itself elevates their importance of the tiny event. The collection of films are presented separately and intermittently to echo the experience of witnessing the moment.

I am interested in the process of drawing as a medium, teetering on the line between reportage and imagination. It interests me how little marks can convey imagery in the human mind, in particular with the addition of familiar movement. Within the construction and composition of the drawn animations I explore the use of minimal line and the white space on the page in order to allow the viewer to apply their own imagination. I am conscious of retaining a sense of ambiguity, making a requirement of the viewer to watch and be rewarded.
